Why the background matters once you tile
With one maximised window, wallpaper is invisible and its only job is to look pleasant for the two seconds a day you see the desktop. Once you tile, the background becomes structural: it shows through gaps, frames every window edge, and sits directly behind translucent menu bars and sidebars.
This is why a busy, high-contrast photograph that looked wonderful behind a single full-screen window can feel chaotic behind a three-column layout. The eye is now processing detailed imagery in the same visual field as the text it is trying to read. Once your layout is stable — after adopting Rectangle or any other keyboard-driven arrangement — it is worth revisiting the wallpaper with that in mind.
What works behind tiled windows
- Gradients and soft blurs. Colour and depth without detail competing for attention.
- Dark, low-contrast imagery. Window edges stay visible; nothing pulls the eye into the gaps.
- Solid or near-solid colours. Unfashionable and extremely effective for dense multi-window work.
- Detail concentrated at the edges. Landscape and architectural shots where the interesting part sits outside the region your windows occupy.
What consistently causes trouble: high-contrast photographs with a busy centre, images with text or logos, and anything with fine repeating detail. Those are exactly the wallpapers that look best on a screenshot of an empty desktop, which is why desktop aesthetics and desktop usability so often diverge.
Judge a wallpaper with your normal layout on screen, not on an empty desktop. Set it, snap your usual three windows, and look at the result for a minute. Half the candidates that looked excellent empty will be obviously wrong.
Gaps, margins and visual separation
A gap setting inserts a margin between snapped windows. With a calm background, six to ten pixels reads as deliberate spacing and helps the eye separate panes. With a busy background, the same gap becomes a strip of visual noise between your documents, which is worse than no gap at all.
So the two settings are coupled. Busy wallpaper plus large gaps is the combination to avoid; calm wallpaper plus modest gaps is the one that looks designed. If you like a detailed image and dense layouts, set gaps to zero and let the windows meet — the hairline boundary is less distracting than a window into the photograph behind.
Light, dark and the menu bar
macOS derives menu bar and sidebar translucency from what is behind them, so wallpaper affects legibility at the top of the screen regardless of how you tile. A light image with a dark region at the top produces a menu bar that changes contrast as you scroll a fullscreen window behind it — visually unsettled in a way that is hard to identify until you switch to something uniform.
If you use automatic light and dark switching, choose a wallpaper pair rather than one image, and check both against your usual layout. Dynamic wallpapers that shift through the day are pleasant but worth testing at their extremes; a layout that is comfortable at midday can be harsh at the evening variant.
Per-Space wallpapers as context markers
One genuinely useful trick: give each macOS Space a different wallpaper colour. Work is blue, personal is green, a specific project is dark grey. Because the change registers peripherally, you know which context you are in before you have consciously looked at anything, which makes switching Spaces meaningfully faster.
Combine it with per-Space layouts and you have a lightweight context system with no additional software. Does wallpaper affect performance?
Static images, no. Animated or video wallpapers use real GPU resources, which can matter during rendering or compilation.
Can each display have its own wallpaper?
Yes, and it is worth doing — different backgrounds per screen make it slightly easier to know which display you are looking at.
What resolution should a wallpaper be?
At least the native resolution of your largest display. On a 5K panel, a 1080p image will look visibly soft.
