Multi-Monitor MacBook Setups: Surviving the Dock and Undock Cycle

Connecting a MacBook to two external displays is easy. Getting your windows back where they belong afterwards is the part nobody warns you about.

Why windows scatter, and why it is not a bug

When a display disconnects, every window on it has to go somewhere, so macOS relocates them to a screen that still exists. When the display returns, the system has no record of the original arrangement and leaves everything where it landed. This is reasonable behaviour and also genuinely irritating twice a day.

There are two responses. One is to fight it with software that memorises arrangements per display configuration. The other is to make rebuilding so fast that it stops being worth preventing. The second is more reliable, because a keyboard-driven rebuild works identically regardless of what the operating system did, and does not depend on the display being recognised as the same one it was yesterday.

A ten-second rebuild routine

The routine is worth practising deliberately once so that it becomes automatic. Work application by application rather than screen by screen: bring an app to the front, send it to the display it belongs on, snap it into position, move to the next. Roughly two seconds per window.

The reason this beats dragging is not only speed. Dragging across displays requires visual tracking of the cursor between screens, which is exactly the fiddly, error-prone interaction that makes people avoid multi-monitor setups. The shortcuts in Rectangle make screen assignment a discrete decision rather than a manual operation.

Assigning roles to screens

Layouts survive better when each display has a defined job. The most durable convention: primary display for the work itself, secondary for reference and monitoring, and the laptop screen — usually smaller and lower — for communication and anything glanceable.

Putting communication on the laptop screen is deliberate. It is the display you look at least, which is precisely where interrupting content belongs. Reversing this — chat on the big screen in front of you — is the single most common reason people report that a three-monitor setup made them less productive.

Display arrangement in System Settings

Before blaming any software for windows landing on the wrong screen, check that macOS's mental model matches your desk. In the Displays panel, the screen rectangles should be dragged into the same relative positions as the physical monitors, including vertical offset if one sits higher.

Get this wrong and next-display commands appear random, because the system's idea of which screen is to the right of which does not match yours. It is a two-minute check and it resolves a large share of complaints about multi-display window management with Rectangle app.

Changing which display is primary reshuffles windows immediately, and macOS occasionally reverts the choice after a firmware or system update. If your arrangement suddenly breaks for no apparent reason, this is the first thing to verify.

Clamshell, sidecar and mixed setups

In clamshell mode the laptop panel is off, so you have one fewer screen and a simpler arrangement. Coming out of clamshell reintroduces it and reshuffles everything — the same rebuild routine applies. Using an iPad as an additional display behaves like any other screen for positioning purposes, though the smaller area means quarters are rarely readable there; halves are the practical minimum.

Can I stop windows moving when I disconnect?

Not really — macOS has to put them somewhere. Fast rebuilding is the practical answer.
