Halves are the wrong unit here
On a 16-inch laptop, halves are the natural division: two windows, both usable. Apply the same instinct to a 34-inch ultrawide and each half is around 17 inches wide — wider than most laptops — which is more space than any single document needs and produces a line length that measurably slows reading.
Thirds are the correct default for ultrawide. Three columns of roughly 11 inches each: main work in the centre or spanning two, reference on one side, communication on the other. This is the arrangement most ultrawide owners eventually arrive at, usually after several weeks of maximising things and wondering why the upgrade felt underwhelming. Rectangle has thirds bound by default, so it takes one keystroke rather than a drag.
Three column patterns worth trying
Even thirds. Three equal columns. Best when all three windows are genuinely being used — a dashboard, a monitoring setup, three documents under comparison.
Two plus one. Two thirds for the main task, one third for a companion. The most common productive arrangement: editor plus terminal, document plus source, spreadsheet plus filing.
Centre plus flanks. A centred main window with narrower columns either side. Slightly awkward with fraction shortcuts but excellent for writing, because the text sits directly in front of you rather than off to one side while peripheral information stays available.

The 49-inch case
A 49-inch super-ultrawide is effectively two 27-inch monitors without a bezel, and should be treated as such. Halves here are two full-size displays' worth of space, which is a reasonable base division; sixths give you a six-panel dashboard that would otherwise require three physical monitors.
The absence of a bezel is a real disadvantage as well as an advantage. On separate monitors the physical gap tells your eye where one context ends and the next begins; on a single panel there is nothing. Turning on the gap setting in Rectangle app for Mac and leaving eight to twelve pixels between windows restores that boundary cheaply.
Curved ultrawides distort colour slightly toward the edges. If you do colour-critical work, keep the graded or designed content in the centre third and put tools and file browsers at the extremes.
Ultrawide versus multiple monitors
Ultrawide wins on continuity: one uninterrupted surface, a window can span any width you like, one cable. Multiple monitors win on separation, physical bezels as context boundaries and, usually, more total pixels for the money.
For window management specifically, the ultrawide is simpler. Every arrangement is one shortcut on one screen; nothing needs to be moved between displays and nothing reshuffles when a monitor is disconnected. That last point matters more than people expect if you dock and undock a laptop daily.
Scaling, and the mistake most people make
macOS scaling on ultrawides deserves attention. Many 34-inch panels are 3440 by 1440, which at default scaling produces interface elements that are comfortable but leaves less usable area than the resolution suggests. Moving one step toward more space often makes a three-column layout genuinely workable where it previously felt cramped.
Set scaling first, then design your layout, not the other way round. Column widths that felt right at one scaling factor will feel wrong at another, and it is frustrating to build a set of habits and then invalidate them. Are thirds really better than halves on ultrawide?
For text work, almost always. Halves on a 34-inch panel produce line lengths well beyond comfortable reading width.

Yes — the two-thirds commands exist specifically for this and are the most-used shortcut on ultrawide setups.
Does macOS handle 32:9 properly?
